10 Safety Tips When Doing Custom Woodworking

Any hobbies that you're doing you have to be aware of any potential danger and safety factor. While doing custom woodworking there are many hazards and you got to handle it well not only for your safety but for others too.

1. Alcohol and tools doesn't make a good couple. Avoid consuming alcohol every time you're working with tools even it only involves minor works. Even with chisel or knife, you can get a nasty cut. Your mind needs to be conscious when working in this hobby. The same thing goes for some medicine or drugs that can encourage drowsiness.

2. Take a look around your workspace. Sawdust and toxic fumes can harm your health. The dangers in them may not be appearing immediately. Safety hazards like these can show their signs a few years later. Use anti explosion fans and make sure you have a good air ventilation.

3. You have seen a lot of safety gear in the local store where you get your equipment and supply. These tools are not for decorations but it's essential for your health. Items like ear cover and safety glass is the most important. Sometimes a simple thing like a push stick when working with blades can save a limb.

4. Don't socialize when working in workshop. Having a TV or radio is also not a good idea. Whatever that distracts your attention from anything that you're doing can lead to accident.

5. It is very important for us to maintain the cleanliness of our shop. If the tools are left messy on the floor you might trip over it. If you hang it, make sure it's sturdy and no risk of it falling on you. Be careful with cords and place them somewhere which is not the main walking area. Sweep the dust because a layer of sawdust can make the floor slippery.

6. There will come a time when your wood work is not quite fit or hard to cut. Don't be frustrated and force them. Stop and check your equipment to see what the real problem is. If you keep pushing the wood it might break and the pieces will hurt you.

7. Think about what you're doing. Don't let your mind drifting somewhere else. You need to focus all the time.

8. If you're in a hurry then you shouldn't be working. This is when most of the accidents will happen.

9. Dress properly. Tie you hair if it's too long. Remove any jewelry before working with your tools.

10. Make sure your power tools stops completely before touching or putting it down.
